Oral Hygiene for Children

Cosmetic and family dentist in Woodbury, NY

At Advanced Dentistry of Long Island we are dedicated to the health and wellness of all our patients, including the youngest ones. New parents are often surprised to learn that cavities are very common in infants; even toothless babies can get cavities. When you start practicing good oral hygiene with your children early on, you will help prevent cavities and make it easier for him or her to take over when the time comes.

ORAL HYGIENE TIPS FOR BABIES & CHILDREN

Here are some oral hygiene tips for your children:

Newborns: A few days after you bring your baby home from the hospital and until teeth begin to appear, gently wipe the gums with very soft gauze or a washcloth once or twice a day.

Under 3 Years Old: Good oral hygiene at this age consists of regular brushing in the morning and night with an ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste. The perfect amount of toothpaste is about the size of a grain of rice. You should not leave your child alone while brushing at this stage because:

  • Toothpaste may be yummy but if swallowed the fluoride it contains could be very dangerous.
  • Most kids won’t brush more than a few seconds before they’re off! We recommend brushing for about two minutes, but we know that for a parent of an active toddler this can be quite a challenge. Keep in mind that brushing even for a short time is better than no brushing at all.

3-6 Years Old: During this oral hygiene stage you can move up to a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Make sure your child brushes twice a day and spits out the toothpaste. Flossing should begin once two teeth have formed that are close enough to touch each other.
