At Advanced Dentistry of Long Island we encourage all of our patients to have a professional dental cleaning four times a year to remove the naturally occurring plaque and tartar that forms on teeth. Studies have shown this biofilm builds up every three months, regardless of how diligently a patient is brushing and flossing. Unfortunately, for many people the formation of plaque and tartar happens at a much faster pace than normal. In this case, Dr. Herman may recommend that you come into the office more frequently for deep cleanings, which are also known as dental scaling or root planing procedures.
DENTAL SCALING & ROOT PLANING: WHO IS THE IDEAL CANDIDATE?
In the case that your gums have begun to pull away from your teeth, or if hard deposits of tartar have begun to form on the roots of your teeth, you may need a dental scaling and root planing procedure.
WHAT IS DENTAL SCALING & ROOT PLANING?
The scaling and root planing procedure is a deep cleaning treatment that involves scraping above and below the gum line. Dr. Herman may place antibiotic fibers into the pockets between your teeth and gums after the procedure to speed up healing and prevent infection.
With good home care and regular dental visits after your dental scaling and planing procedure, gum and bone disease can often be kept from becoming more severe.
